Step into the enchanting world of Boutique Hotel Luz da Lua & Restaurant Kommil Foo, where history and the present embrace each other in a harmonious symphony. Our journey begins with the story of Jorge and Maria Da Luz – Brito, who in 1991 personally built their family home in the picturesque village of Ponta Do Sol on the Cape Verdean island of Santo Antão.
Once the home of their seven children, this house has welcomed many generations. The children cherish their childhood memories of this place to this day. Maria & Jorge ran the renowned Boca da Pistola restaurant here for years, named after the concrete pier of the port town, which protected local fishermen from the powerful waves when entering the harbor.
As the children flew the nest and Jorge and Maria's marriage ended, the house seemed to become a forgotten treasure, surrendered to the elements of nature. But Alaciny and Geert saw its potential. In collaboration with the family, they decided on a large-scale renovation and expansion, respecting the past and with an eye on the future. The family home would breathe new life into the restaurant and become a welcoming haven for tourists with 10 rooms. For Alaciny and Geert, it is also very important that the house remains a meeting place for the Da Luz – Brito – Strobbe family.
Under the guidance of father Jorge, an experienced contractor, the house underwent an impressive transformation. What once seemed like a challenge became a reality: two new floors were added, reinforcements were made, and a beautiful relaxation pool was created, all without compromising the original charm. With a perfect balance between old colonial heritage and contemporary elegance, local materials were maximally utilized in construction, in line with our commitment to responsible luxury. The result is an architectural masterpiece that embraces the soul of the past and opens the door to a radiant future.
With the arrival of Chef Jan Arryn, a childhood friend of Geert, an additional transformation was added to the hotel and the neighborhood. Across from the hotel was a vacant lot owned by the government. In consultation and with thanks to the president of Ribeira Grande, Orlando Delgado, this site is being cleared and redesigned into a delightful outdoor terrace where you can enjoy Cape Verdean hospitality with snacks and drinks. Alaciny & Geert are often on-site but are currently managing their gem from Belgium. Chef Jan, with years of experience in hospitality, tourism, and hospitality, manages the Luz da Lua team as manager and confidant of Alaciny & Geert.
The ambition is to open the doors of Boutique Hotel Luz da Lua & Restaurant Kommil Foo by the end of 2024. Geert's long-cherished dream of creating a new home in Cape Verde will then become a reality. However, it is only the beginning of a new chapter, an invitation for you to be part of our journey, to share new dreams, and create memories that last a lifetime.
